Lexington Mayor and candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Gray released the following statement after the U.S. Senate failed to approve funds to fight the Zika virus.

"Once again, Rand Paul wants to play partisan political games instead of dealing with critical issues. And this time, he's gambling with the health of Americans - including Kentuckians who he represents.

Yesterday, Senator Paul helped add a poison pill to a spending bill to fight the spread of the Zika virus, even as Florida reported the first birth of a baby with Zika-related birth defects.

Instead of doing the right thing in a public health crisis, Rand Paul decided that there were more important things than protecting the American public from the spread of a serious disease.

These kinds of antics are why so many Americans are frustrated with elected officials like Rand Paul. He has shown he's not serious about being a Senator for Kentucky. He'd rather spend his time fighting partisan battles instead of dealing with serious issues.

I will always put the needs of Kentuckians and Americans first as your Senator. Enough partisan fighting. Kentuckians deserve real leadership."
